For Real – Tory Lanez

May 11, 2016

For Real - Tory Lanez
Free Download | For Real - Tory Lanez

Tory Lanez is one of those artists who’s career was destined to take off from the start; he founded this trappy Toronto auto-tuned sound, and despite the fact that other rappers are replicating his technique he’s managed to build his lead and drop enough world renowned material to keep it.

‘For Real’ is a two-part track, whereas the first half is about running the rap game and flexing on his rivals, the second half is much more sentimental. He explains how “pressure” has turned his streets-raised mentality caused him stress, caused him to flip drugs, caused him to rob people and keep a tight circle. It’s a story that the rap industry has glorified, from Biggie Smalls to Tory Lanez, the idea of being able to make it out of the ghetto and become a rich ‘rarri driving trap star is a common dream in America’s impoverished cities.

Production by Tory himself and his long-time compadre Play Picasso makes for an elegant yet explosive instrumental, perfectly molded to Tory’s vocals. As always, there’s a free download for you above. If you aren’t already following the man on Soundcloud and Twitter you’ve been sleeping, so wake up and show him some love.

A Milli – Lil Wayne (Y2K Remix)

A Milli - Lil Wayne (Y2K Remix)
Free Download | A Milli - Lil Wayne (Y2K Remix)

In an era where record labels are suing everyone and their mom over copyright disputes, and many electronic artist’s are losing their social media accounts, followers, etc. due to reported material, it’s a bold move for Y2K to sample this entire song from Lil Wayne’s The Carter III. That being said, I love Y2K’s remixes, and when I saw that he had put his spin on this song AND released it for free, I had to put it on here for y’all.

The song starts with the familiar “A milli, a milli, a milli” loop that we were all bumping back in 2008, but when Lil Wayne starts his first verse the production starts to evolve. A menacing cymbal roll erupts into a sea of claps, a grumbling bass line, and an extraterrestrial synth lead until finally dropping off into an insane percussion sequence. Chopper-esque high-hats, something that sounds like a cowbell, and a booming baritone. The song gets progressively more ludicrous when Y2K applies a Megatron sounding filter to the hook, and inserts an oddly fitting SpongeBob sample into the last verse.

As far as I’m concerned, this song needed a face lift, and as long as it’s free online it’s free here. Cop it if you’re feeling it, and be sure to throw Y2k a follow on Soundcloud and Twitter too.

2090’s – Ambré

2090's - Ambré
Free Download |

We fell in love with Ambré’s voice when she first graced us with her aggressive, emotional, and poetically flawless single Paradigm. She dabbles in topics that other vocalists won’t touch, and makes the subject palatable with her exceptional vocal range, addicting melodies, and unique production.

‘2090s’ is the first project she’s dropped since her debut project Wanderlust came out last year, and already we’re hearing a significant difference not only in the quality of her writing, but the overall sound is of a much higher caliber than we anticipated. Having not released any material leading up to it’s debut, the project came as a bit of a surprise, and came out on the worst date for any artist’s album to drop — the same day that Drake released ‘VIEWS’.

The entire 15-track tape is down tempo and seemingly melancholy. The songs cover a wide range of topics from love to lust, and the instrumentals were provided by a plethora of different NOLA based creators. I’ll let the project speak for itself, but definitely give Telly, Nintendo $hawty, and Free a listen. If you like what you hear, make sure you show some love by giving Ambré a follow on Twitter, Soundcloud, and Instagram.

Fool For You – Big Z & Jackson Breit

Fool For You - Big Z & Jackson Breit
Free Download | Fool For You - Big Z & Jackson Breit

This isn’t the production we’re used to hearing underneath Jackson Breit‘s smooth summertime vocals, but the electronic symphony that Philadelphia composer Big Z created is absolutely marvelous. While I was hesitant at first, within the first ten seconds of listening to this new release I knew I had to share it with y’all.

An enticing piano chord progression is coated with airy synths, mystical sound effects, and hollow percussion as Jackson makes his entrance. The melody sounds like a jazzy pop jam, but the snare build-up at the one-minute mark transitions the song into a tropical house breakdown. The genre-blending ambiance is surprisingly amicable; Jackson Breit’s versatility allows him to go from New Orleans’ style funk-revivals to acoustic serenades to heavily produced electronic gems like this.

The song is easy-going, free spirited, and depicts a strong infatuation that’s pulls you out of your comfort zone. It’s a song to dance to, a song to party to, and a song you can download for free. Although this isn’t the sound we expect to hear from Jackson Breit all summer, it’s definitely worth checking out. If you like what you hear, be sure to show some love by giving Jackson a follow on Soundcloud, Twitter, and Instagram.

Draft Pick – Ace Hood

Draft Pick - Ace Hood

Tis’ the season for rappers to come out of hiatus and showcase how hard they were grinding in the winter. While Ace Hood hasn’t been a prominent name in the hip-hop industry for awhile, and hasn’t had a charting single since 2013, so needless to say he’s looking to make a comeback. A few weeks a go I posted his single The Type, and it sounds like we’re in for more of the same with this hubristic release.

With expertly delivered lyrics, and a flow that has yet to be copied, it’s no wonder why Ace is still able to pull hundreds of thousands of plays on seemingly effortless creations. ‘Draft Pick’ was released in sync with the NFL draft last week, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that these well-versed lyrics are centered around the Florida native’s rise to fame, fortune, and being everyone’s “number one draft pick.”

The production is a simple, hyphy beat from Miami’s Smash David, who’s also been handling Jason Derulo’s material for the past few months. It’s a good song, and as per usual it’s a free DL, so cop it if you like what you hear and show Ace some love on Soundcloud and Twitter.

Why Don’t You – Ben Owens

May 6, 2016

Why Don't You - Ben Owens
Free Download | Why Don't You - Ben Owens

Ben Owens hasn’t dropped a new record in a couple of months, but this definitely isn’t what I was expecting to hear after his brief hiatus. The eerie key and stuttered pace of this new release seems like a regression, given that his last three releases featured Felly, Matt Burton, and the upbeat high-quality production of Cavalier.

‘Why Don’t You’ might not be my favorite Ben Owen’s track, but it still has all of the qualities I look for in a hype-worthy single. MKSB is an Alaskan producer who’s been behind the boards of more than a couple Ben Owens singles, which makes for a consistent and coherent sound, but doesn’t flex the versatility that we hoped to hear from Ben, and definitely doesn’t showcase the summertime feel-good sound that most music listeners are yearning for.

That being said, the lyrics are a healthy combination of poetic euphemisms and suggestive bars, and Ben’s vocals are as airy and soothing as they’ve always been. The female vocal sample is unnamed, but it adds a certain sensuality to the track that was surely needed. The pace is slow, but the percussion still slaps and the bass still kicks. By all means it’s a great release, just maybe out of season? Regardless, give it a listen and show the boy Ben some love on Soundcloud and Twitter if you like what you hear.

Down Dance EP – Appleby

May 5, 2016

Down Dance EP - Appleby
Free Download | Down Dance EP - Appleby

Appleby is a mystery to the world. His artist name is actually his Mom’s maiden name, and he’s turned down shows and other offers because he doesn’t want to show his face to the world. In some ways he’s a rapper, in some ways he’s a singer, and in some ways he’s just a poet. Regardless of how you classify him, the only thing that we can honestly say about this artist is that his music is phenomenal.

This 4-track EP is just a taste of what he’s capable of, and although none of them have surpassed his most-played single Bitter Boy yet, there’s a lot of potential here. The production quality is top notch, the vocals are humbling, and this man just started making music a year ago. The highlights of this tape are definitely Castles and Random Love, but the versatility from song to song leaves a lot open to interpretation. While I was hoping the lyrics would give us a little insight into Appleby’s shrouded life, the words he speaks seem just as complex and convoluted as he is.

We’re not the first ones to find Appleby, but we definitely won’t be the last. This perplexing musician is already on the rise, so be sure to throw the man a follow on Soundcloud and Twitter if you like what you hear.

Waiting On The Sunrise – Felly & Matt Burton

May 4, 2016

Waiting On The Sunrise - Felly & Matt Burton
Free Download | Waiting On The Sunrise - Felly & Matt Burton

The first time I heard this song was when Felly and D. Brute recorded a little summertime jam session back in August of last year. Unfortunately D. Brute didn’t make it onto the final record, despite his surprisingly soothing vocals. Instead, Matt Burton made it in the cut, which is a collab we’ve been waiting far too long to hear.

‘Waiting On The Sunrise’ is the epitome of a feel-good summertime jam. The melancholy lyrics paired with the bouncy chords and waning synth leads make for a very Felly-branded single. The hook is about people who are working for the weekend, waiting for the good days to come around, and making it through the hard times. Fel’s career has taken off this year, with two big-city tours, appearances at a few music festivals, and a plethora of new fans from around the world. Summertime is when this Conn-Cali musician shows his true colors, and hopefully this is the first of many new tracks to drop.

Matt Burton is a Portland based artist that’s been struggling to get his career off the ground. He’s talented beyond comparison, but in a city where resources are limited and studios are few and far between, he’s having to put in twice the effort to get a somewhat marketable product out. He describes his situation best, saying “I need funds to escape, but the funds that I need ain’t gonna come til’ I’m made. So I’m stuck for awhile, until I get paid, but right now… the Ramen Noodles right next to the Hennessey.”

Cop the free download and show the prodigy Felly some love on Twitter and Soundcloud.

Girl In The City (prod. MjNicholas) – Chris Buxton

Girl In The City (prod. MjNicholas) - Chris Buxton

Free Download | Girl In The City - Chris Buxton

Awwwww shit, South Carolina rapper Chris Buxton is back at it again with another single!

‘Girl In The City’ is the latest single from Chris Buxton, and it’s the first song he’s officially released since his short visit to Austin, TX for our SXSW showcase. This is also the first track we posted to the site that was produced by MjNicholas, and his production style is extremely complex, with an assortment of sounds ringing in and out through the whole song. Chris is still a relatively new artist, so it is always good to hear him changing up is style and trying new things. He flexes a different kind of flow over a different kind of beat, and in my opinion he pulls it off spectacularly.

‘Girl In The City’ is about being young, foolish and raises the question: is the “girl in the city” real, or just a metaphor for what Chris is going through in life?

Whatever your interpretation is, ‘Girl In The City’ will be making an appearance on my summer playlist. If this is the first song you have heard from Chris Buxton be sure to check out his other material. Chris Buxton is on the rise so be sure to follow him on SoundCloud, Twitter and Instagram.

New To Me – Russ

May 2, 2016

Free Download | New To Me - Russ

I made the prediction that Russ would hit 100,000 followers on SoundCloud before summer starts, and with the release of ‘New To Me’, Russ has officially hit the 100,000 mark.  Will Russ do anything special for hitting this milestone? Will he release a fire track? Drop and album or blow it off like it is no big deal? Only time will tell.

Regardless, Russ’s latest weekly single jams in a way that only Russ track can jam. Russ has been one of the most interesting artists to follow, not only because he is constantly releasing new music that reflects his hard work and his ever-changing lifestyle, but because his methodology has been extremely controversial in the music community. This week Russ has dedicated his weekly single to the changes he is seeing in his lifestyle. He raps over another beat that he produced, providing insight and killing the chorus with the lyrics “Ok this money that I’m makin yea thats new to me, all these women getting naked yea thats new to me, I’m the topic of conversation thats new to me”.

If the hook doesn’t sell you on this song then the verses definitely will. With lyrics like “This is that build a fanbase without a shortcut, turn my Nissan into a tour bus, this is by me for us, put my family on my back, rock that shit like its a jersey, doing circles around the game until I’m dizzy and I’m blurry” Russ states that he will not slow down and he will continue to run circles around music industry while growing his fanbase without a label.

A Russ follow is a must, so be sure to follow him on SoundCloud, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
