Tropicana – Topaz Jones

May 21, 2016

Tropicana - Topaz Jones
Free Download | Tropicana - Topaz Jones

I honestly don’t know how I found this song, I’m pretty sure it was just one of the recommended tracks that show up after you listen to something on Soundcloud, but regardless, I’m glad I found Topaz Jones. The Montclair, NJ based rapper just came back from what seems to be a 2 year hiatus, but the development of his brand and sound is easy to see and hear just from spending a couple minutes on his page.

‘Tropicana’ is nothing like his last release Wasteland, but the switch up ended with an indie-reggae inspired hit. He sounds so comfortable behind the mic, and as a listener it’s almost impossible not to sing this hook and vibe out to the groovy instrumental with Topaz Jones. The panning pads, crisp percussion and cowbell, combined with the upbeat bass line and faint guitar rifts make for an unorthodox instrumental, but this sound is nothing shy of prodigious. It’s rare for an artist to come back from a break as long as Topaz’s and drop two great songs with elements of opposite genres, but whatever his plan is it seems to be working so far.

Check it out, and if you’re feeling it be sure to give Topaz Jones a follow on Soundcloud and Twitter to show some love.

A Song To You (Outro) – Matt Burton

May 20, 2016

A Song To You (Outro) - Matt Burton
Free Download | A Song To You (Outro) - Matt Burton

It’s good to hear Matt Burton back on a beat like this; last month he was flowing over a heavy trap beat on 2VM in Portland and it just didn’t feel quite right. This slow, piano and percussion centered instrumental with a jazzy bass line, however, is an absolutely perfect setting for the long-haired artist to flow over.

As you can probably infer from the title, ‘A Song To You’ is a love song — in a sense. It’s an open apology, and a sensual way of asking for redemption from the girl he let down. I’m pretty sure we can connect the dots and consider this a part II of A Song To Love (Intro). Both songs sound like some form of encrypted love note, clearly intended for someone who’s listening. Although the lyrics are mildly easy to empathize with, they’re meant for easy listening, and that’s exactly how they came out. No matter where you’re kicking back, this is the kind of music you should have playing in the background.

Matt Burton isn’t new to our site at all, but if you’re just now hearing his angelic voice you should check out some of the tracks we’ve shared and throw him a follow on Soundcloud and Twitter.

Ride On (EP) – Cydeways

Ride On (EP) - Cydeways

Free Download | Ride On (EP) - Cydeways

With summer in full swing, many of you might be on the search for new reggae bands to put on the playlist. Cydeways is a reggae trio based in Santa Barbara with East Coast roots, and their newest EP “Ride On” came just in time for the warmer months.

Compared to their previous releases, “Ride On” demonstrates a significant growth in the quality of their writing, performance, delivery, and mixing. As far as reggae music goes, the tracks are well orchestrated and far from formulaic. Clean guitar and horn parts occupy the mid-range, funky bass lines sit in the pocket, and (what sounds like) live tracked drums carry the rhythm. Also, I’ve noticed that many independent bands cut of this cloth seem to have lazy lead vocals, but I was very impressed with how good of a voice their lead singer, Dustin Parks, has.

If you’re looking for a warm down tempo soundtrack to your day, throw on this EP, roll down your windows, and let the good vibes roll. And as always, if you like what you hear be sure to keep up with Cydeways on Facebook, SoundCloud, and Twitter to show some support and be the first to cop their latest drops.

FML – K.Flay (SMLE Remix)

FML - K.Flay (SMLE Remix)
Free Download | FML - K.Flay (SMLE Remix)

I don’t know if you’ve heard of K. Flay before, but if this is the first time I highly recommend you go check out her Soundcloud page. Her voice has become very prominent in the electronic industry, and she’s collabed with big names like Louis The Child and Kaskade, but she doesn’t release much free material so we haven’t had the chance to share her music on here yet. However, her original song FML blew up and started being reworked by a ton of great producers, including SMLE.

SMLE, which is seemingly obviously a take on the word “smile” without the “i”, has been blowing up in his own respect. He mostly drops remixes of popular tracks, but his original work is equally impressive. His rendition of ‘FML’ has proven to be one of my favorites, and since it’s free to download I figured this would be a good time to introduce you to both artists. The chill, airy and synthy production combined with hard hitting drops into a hypnotic ambient sequence is a style that SMLE applies to the majority of his mixes, while the melancholy vocals and despondent but relateable lyrics are K. Flay’s signature sound.

Both artists are phenomenal and relatively undiscovered. Show some support by giving K. Flay and SMLE a follow on Soundcloud if you like what you hear.

Eventually – Wingtip

Eventually - Wingtip
Free Download | Eventually - Wingtip

I don’t post enough indie-electronic material on here, and hopefully this is the start of a new trend for me. NYC’s Wingtip is a great artist to start with; he’s not huge yet, and his music is extremely chill. The oldest song he posted is 10 months old, so hopefully he’s new to you too. After skimming through his feed, I can confidently say that this man makes nothing but beautiful, head-nod inducing jams.

Although Wingtip dabbles in remixes, this is 100% original, and it reminds me of something out of the movie Drive. The looping synth melody, the airy explosions, the ambient sound effects, and the panning percussion make up the majority of the song, and provide an elegant setting for the single lyric “Eventually” to be sung and repeated.

I’d be going on a tangent if I tried to tell you what I thought the meaning of this song was, but Wingtip wrote “And when at last you find someone to whom you feel you can pour out your soul, you stop in shock at the words you utter— they are so rusty, so ugly, so meaningless and feeble from being kept in the small cramped dark inside you so long. For her, put your dancing shoes on.” Maybe it doesn’t need to have a deeper meaning, maybe this is just the kind of song that makes you want to dance with the girl you love and make her feel special.

It’s a great track, and if you’re just now discovering Wingtip like me you should throw him a follow on Soundcloud and Twitter.

Good Love – Brasstracks & Jay Prince

Good Love - Brasstracks & Jay Prince
Free Download | Good Love - Brasstracks & Jay Prince

Have you ever listened to a song and thought, “Man, this song is great, but a saxophone/trumpet solo would really make this song better.” If not, it’s cool, you probably wouldn’t know what to do with a brass instrument if you had one anyways. Thankfully, Brasstracks is a team of incredibly talented brass players and percussionists, and they’ve been adding flavor to tasty tracks for over two years now.

A lot of their material is on iTunes, so I haven’t been able to share them with y’all until just now. Thankfully this collab with Jay Prince was a free drop, and it’s as awesome as it can be. An expertly produced brass line up erupts over some organic percussion — make sure you catch the sick drum solo at 2:15 — making a perfect setting for the London based rapper to flow over. Jay Prince first came across our radar when we started keeping up with the Soulection collective, and since then he’s grown into his potential in a huge way. The majority of his songs have over 100,000 plays on soundcloud, and his following has been growing across the globe.

Both of these artists are great musicians all around, and I highly recommend you give both Brasstracks and Jay Prince a follow on Soundcloud if you like what you hear.

Sweet Talk Stole The Show – ACADEMY & Kygo

Sweet Talk Stole The Show - ACADEMY & Kygo
Free Download | Sweet Talk Stole The Show - ACADEMY & Kygo

ACADEMY has yet to announce their release date for this project, but with every song they drop I get more and more hyped. This collaboration/sample/mashup probably isn’t going to be on the project, but it’s definitely worth a listen. The tropical instrumental from Norway’s most beloved producer is a perfect fit for this LA duo and the first single from their forthcoming album Sweet Talk.

Personally, I think mashups are either hit or miss, there’s not really a gray area. This is one of those remixes/mashups that fall under the hit category. You’ve probably heard Kygo’s track Stole The Show, especially since it accrued over 100 million plays on YT alone in less than a year. Although the original version is much deeper, sentimental, and introspective, ACADEMY’s light-hearted vibe turns the instrumental into something entirely new. It’s happy, it’s vibey, and it’s much more energetic than their original acoustic jam.

This might be a great track, but if you haven’t heard ACADEMY’s other material yet you need to go check out some of our older posts. If you like what you find, be sure to throw the guys a follow on Soundcloud, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram to show some support.

2090’s – Ambré

May 9, 2016

2090's - Ambré
Free Download |

We fell in love with Ambré’s voice when she first graced us with her aggressive, emotional, and poetically flawless single Paradigm. She dabbles in topics that other vocalists won’t touch, and makes the subject palatable with her exceptional vocal range, addicting melodies, and unique production.

‘2090s’ is the first project she’s dropped since her debut project Wanderlust came out last year, and already we’re hearing a significant difference not only in the quality of her writing, but the overall sound is of a much higher caliber than we anticipated. Having not released any material leading up to it’s debut, the project came as a bit of a surprise, and came out on the worst date for any artist’s album to drop — the same day that Drake released ‘VIEWS’.

The entire 15-track tape is down tempo and seemingly melancholy. The songs cover a wide range of topics from love to lust, and the instrumentals were provided by a plethora of different NOLA based creators. I’ll let the project speak for itself, but definitely give Telly, Nintendo $hawty, and Free a listen. If you like what you hear, make sure you show some love by giving Ambré a follow on Twitter, Soundcloud, and Instagram.

Fool For You – Big Z & Jackson Breit

May 8, 2016

Fool For You - Big Z & Jackson Breit
Free Download | Fool For You - Big Z & Jackson Breit

This isn’t the production we’re used to hearing underneath Jackson Breit‘s smooth summertime vocals, but the electronic symphony that Philadelphia composer Big Z created is absolutely marvelous. While I was hesitant at first, within the first ten seconds of listening to this new release I knew I had to share it with y’all.

An enticing piano chord progression is coated with airy synths, mystical sound effects, and hollow percussion as Jackson makes his entrance. The melody sounds like a jazzy pop jam, but the snare build-up at the one-minute mark transitions the song into a tropical house breakdown. The genre-blending ambiance is surprisingly amicable; Jackson Breit’s versatility allows him to go from New Orleans’ style funk-revivals to acoustic serenades to heavily produced electronic gems like this.

The song is easy-going, free spirited, and depicts a strong infatuation that’s pulls you out of your comfort zone. It’s a song to dance to, a song to party to, and a song you can download for free. Although this isn’t the sound we expect to hear from Jackson Breit all summer, it’s definitely worth checking out. If you like what you hear, be sure to show some love by giving Jackson a follow on Soundcloud, Twitter, and Instagram.

Down Dance EP – Appleby

May 5, 2016

Down Dance EP - Appleby
Free Download | Down Dance EP - Appleby

Appleby is a mystery to the world. His artist name is actually his Mom’s maiden name, and he’s turned down shows and other offers because he doesn’t want to show his face to the world. In some ways he’s a rapper, in some ways he’s a singer, and in some ways he’s just a poet. Regardless of how you classify him, the only thing that we can honestly say about this artist is that his music is phenomenal.

This 4-track EP is just a taste of what he’s capable of, and although none of them have surpassed his most-played single Bitter Boy yet, there’s a lot of potential here. The production quality is top notch, the vocals are humbling, and this man just started making music a year ago. The highlights of this tape are definitely Castles and Random Love, but the versatility from song to song leaves a lot open to interpretation. While I was hoping the lyrics would give us a little insight into Appleby’s shrouded life, the words he speaks seem just as complex and convoluted as he is.

We’re not the first ones to find Appleby, but we definitely won’t be the last. This perplexing musician is already on the rise, so be sure to throw the man a follow on Soundcloud and Twitter if you like what you hear.
