This is it, the last week of Fall semester, and what better way to kick off winter break than a free release from Chance The Rapper featuring two of the worlds greatest male R&B singers? Last month we were relieved to hear a refined hip-hop release from Chance, and once again it sounds like he’s perfected the balance between Social Experiment’s organic production style and positive messages with his distinct rap delivery and lyricism. It’s no secret that Chancellor Bennett is the hottest thing coming out of Chicago right now, and despite — or perhaps because of — turning down countless record label deals and maintaining his independence, Chance has one of the strongest fan bases in the world. This song initially debuted on Saturday Night Live last weekend, which was one of Chance’s first internationally televised performances, and the sense of excitement absolutely radiates from his verses. The production starts off simple; panning synths and crisp hip-hop percussion back Chance & Jeremih’s vocals until R. Kelly comes in over the SOX symphony. The song is finished like a grand finale; a chorus of brass instruments build up over layers of harmonies, a full jazz drum kit, and a grand piano. This song is a piece of art, so don’t miss your chance to cop it for free and throw Chance The Rapper a follow on Twitter and Soundcloud.

Angels – Chance The Rapper & Saba

This is the refined Chance The Rapper sound we were all holding out for. The Social Experiment is a project he started after the huge success of his sophomore project Acid Rap; in search of his true organic sound, Chance came out with some “experimental” material that was a little bit too out there for his dedicated hip-hop fans, but the indie-rap phase he went through definitely fabricated a few gems like Israel, Planes, and Lady Friend. Regardless of what you thought of Chance’s SOX project, the bona fide sound he and his team created is undeniably unique, and it all seems to have been leading up to this release. I might be looking to deep into it, but I feel like the rising sun in the track artwork is a metaphor for the start of a new chapter in Chance’s career. “Angels” showcases the live instruments we’ve grown to expect from his new material, combined with the aggressive upbeat delivery we heard on his earlier projects, and the result is the most polished sound Chance The Rapper has ever put out.

The first few seconds of the track tease you and make you think this is about to be another indie jam, but the return of his notorious ad-libs come in like pure bliss to your hip-hop craving ears. Production from Lido, Donnie Trumpet, and Nate Fox sets the tone for the entire song; optimistic major chords are played out on a plethora of different keys, resounding brass instruments intensify the transitions, crisp fast-paced percussion (including a freaking steel drum) rides along a steady 156 BPM, and a gospel-esque chorus harmonizes with the alluring melody. Despite the amazing setting that Chance’s team of producers constructed for him, his impeccably written lyrics are by far the best part of this song. Chance The Rapper has been extremely proactive in Chicago, and not just in music, but politics. His campaigns against gang violence and his dedication to educating the youth of Chi-Town has made him a role model for the city, and his figurehead status is the core subject of this song. Something great is on the way from Chance, so be sure you’re following him on Soundcloud and Twitter. Enjoy.

Israel – Chance The Rapper & Noname Gypsy

Chance has been all over the place so far in 2015; he dropped SURF with Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment, he’s collabing with Lil B on a freestyle project, and out of nowhere he dropped this easy-going track featuring Noname Gypsy. A leisurely tempo, boom-bap percussion, muted piano/guitar chords, and the distant sound of crickets paint a calm scene. As if they’re sitting around a campfire, Chance and Gypsy take turns hitting the instrumental with clever word play discussing social issues, politics, and religion. Hit play, enjoy the new Chicago-branded tune, and cop the free download if you like what you hear.

Amen – Chance The Rapper & Lil B

free based freestyles mixtape

Free Download | Amen - Chance The Rapper & Lil B

I missed the whole Lil B wave that everyone was riding back in 2012, but from what I remember his music and persona was more of a joke than anything else. Right when I thought I was done seeing “BASED GOD” on my Twitter feed indefinitely, Chance The Rapper drops this song and announces a full-length freestyle collaboration project with Lil B titled “Free Based Freestyles”. Chance is like this year’s Kid Cudi, Mac Miller, or even Asher Roth. His music has taken a hard left turn down a more experimental road, and his fan base has been segmented into two categories: die-hard fans and uneasy hip-hop critics. Unlike SURF however, the production on this track is far from organic; heavily blurred synth, electronic drum patterns, and simplistic arrangements are the antithesis of what we’ve been hearing from Chance lately. As the mixtape title suggests, this track is a freestyle in every sense of the word. The clearly unrehearsed and uncut track probably won’t do it for a lot of you, but hearing Chance rap over reverb-drowned chords — freestyle or not — is oddly comforting. I had little to no expectations for Lil B on this track, but surprisingly his verse wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I was expecting it to be. He keeps the ambiance poetic and insightful despite the fact that this genre isn’t exactly his niche, and in a weird unexpected way I think I became a Lil B fan today. Give it a listen. If you feel it, go and show support for Chance and Lil B on Twitter.

Surf – Chance The Rapper & The Social Experiment (Mixtape)

Free Download | SURF – Chance The Rapper, Donnie Trumpet, & The Social Experiment

This is, without a doubt, the most organic sounding “hip-hop” project that will drop this year. The Social Experiment, which is Chance’s Chicago-based experimental group, produced this entire album using what sounds like nothing but live instruments, with an added emphasis on Donnie Trumpet’s trumpet work. Despite the big names you’ll see on this playlist (Big Sean, J. Cole, Busta Rhymes, B.o.B, etc.), the album really hasn’t gotten much attention yet. The fact is that there aren’t any bangers on this tape; no one expected this album to sound anything like Acid Rap, which I think is the reason it’s not gaining much momentum. This is the new Chance, this is the rapper who only talks about topics that possess a more profound meaning than what we’re accustomed to, the rapper who’s transitioned into a more mature phase in his career. The incessant trumpet-based instrumentals, natural sounding strings, and abnormal fusion of hip-hop, jazz, and experimental genres define the project more than anything else. Check it out, it’s definitely not something you want to put on your turn up or workout playlist, but the project is full of good vibes and free to cop off iTunes (yes, they released the project for free via iTunes). Enjoy.

Planes – Jeremih, Lido, & The Social Experiment

April 29, 2015

Download Planes - Jeremih, Lido, & The Social Experiment

Jeremih has gotten a l0t of love for his single Planes feat. J. Cole, and although it’s a few months old, an unexpected collab between Lido & Chance The Rapper gives this song new life. Although Jeremih’s reverberating vocals are still the focal point of the track, Lido’s production is as impregnable as ever; perfectly placed percussion, explosions of synth and horns, emotive drops and build ups, and of course a bouncy fluid bass-line. Chance The Rapper has been experimenting with his Social Experiment group a lot lately¬† — particularly because of his lyricism on songs like this — the only word I can think of to describe it is corny. Despite Chance’s odd flows, he still comes off as a worthy feature for this remix, and hopefully you enjoy the track as much as I did.

Lady Friend – Chance The Rapper & The Social Experiment

February 16, 2015

Download Lady Friend - Chance The Rapper & The Social Experiment

I don’t think I’m alone when I say Chance The Rapper’s music has taken an “experimental” turn; ever since Acid Rap took off, he’s been working with a small crew in Chicago on a project called The Social Experiment, which was seen as a controversial career move by the majority of his fan base. That being said, I’m a fan of what Chance has been trying to do up in Illinois, but this is one of the first tracks they’ve released for free. Their sound is unique, and the live instruments they use give the production a sort of jazzy Chi-Town-branded quality. Chance The Rapper has ironically strayed away from rapping in a big way, and although it’s garnered a lot of criticism, he’s proven his versatility and emerged himself in a completely different genre. The lyricism seems painfully simple at first, but when you reminisce about times with your lady-friend I’m sure you’ll be able to understand where he’s coming from. Check it out, hopefully you can vibe with it.

Welcome to the trippy R&B collab titled ‘Suitcase’. Everyone’s favorite Chicago rappers Vic and Chance are known for their unique lyricism and innovative production, both of which are prominent in this free new single. The entire song the go back and forth dreaming of a paradise they could escape to with nothing but a suitcase. As always, their lyrics are like a puzzle that take a few listens to unscramble. Obviously the suitcase symbolizes something, but as for the Dragon Ball Z reference in their album art I haven’t thought of an explanation. Maybe they just like Dragon Ball Z. Either way, kick back and enjoy some modern Chicago-Blues.

Three Course Meal – ProbCause, Action Bronson, & Chance The Rapper

Chicago artist ProbCause released his mixtape “The Recipe Vol. 2” last month but the release had slipped under a lot of people’s radars, and that goes for mine as well. Until this morning that is. The whole tape is solid but the most standout track to me on the tape was this joint with Action Bronson, and Chance. One of my favorite things about this budding Chi-town rapper is his very psychedelic vibe in the instrumentals he uses. If you just took the lyrics out, I imagine that’s what an acid trip would sound like. Unlike “LSD” another track on the tape (and featured on the site), the beat is more suitable for hip-hop while keeping that 60’s vibe which really resonates with the styles of ProbCause, and Chance. It’s a great beat, by a good artist, with two dope features. You might want to keep this on replay.

Mick Jenkins grabs the 2013 all-star Chance The Rapper and his similar sounding homie Vic Mensa for this jazzy laid back track. Chance’s tongue twisting verse flies high above Vic and Mick, but still definitely worth a full listen. Chicago’s definitely developed their own sound, and their jazzy smoking vibe is taking over the rap game right now.
