Having Fun – Marc E. Bassy

Marc is still on his groovy acoustic kick, and although I can’t speak for everyone, I love it. The R&B singer has been getting mixed feedback about his transition; many people who know him for his work with 2AM Club, or with rappers like G-Eazy and Skizzy Mars are unsatisfied with the switch up. I think it’s important to keep an open mind when listening to new music, and versatility should never be barraged or shunned.

‘Having Fun’ has accrued just shy of 1,000,000 plays since it’s release two weeks ago, which is by far the fastest that any of his original songs has taken off. The beat starts off with an acoustic guitar chord progression layered underneath some female vocal samples, which leads into a slowly building a drum line as Marc sings his first verse. The watered down claps and cymbals keep the instrumental splashy until about 2:13, where the beat tightens up and Marc spits a few bars for his hip-hop fans.

This song is about the highs that fade away, the numbness that comes with success, and addressing the elephant in the room as to whether or not everyone’s actually still having fun, or just partying out of habit. It’s a deep song, and certainly one that you can empathize with. Show Marc some love on Soundcloud, Twitter, and Instagram if you like what you hear.

Wool – Marc E. Bassy

This is the sound that Marc has been focusing on over the winter months: lightly produced acoustic indie/R&B jams. Although he broke the trend with a vibey hip-hop and soul track titled 40 Water a couple of weeks back, the bedroom recordings are back at the forefront of his feed with the arrival of this new original single ‘Wool’.

A lot of the Marc fans who prefer his rap verses and hip-hop produced tracks have been voicing their discontent with all the recent acoustic material, but you have to remember that ALL rap, hip-hop, electronic, indie, reggae, metal, whatever-genre-you-can-think-of artists are — first and foremost — songwriters. At it’s core, every song you hear can be broken down into chord progressions, melodies, and harmonies. I think the fact that Marc is getting back to the basics and developing his composition is a great thing, and it bodes well for the future of his music.

We all know that Marc is a phenomenal artist. Success has followed him everywhere since his departure from 2AM Club nearly 3 years ago, and it’s not a matter of luck. Marc E. Bassy and his team work their asses off, and although he’s been touring around the world with G-Eazy for the past two months, he’s been releasing new music more consistently than any of his other on-tour companions. Show some love to the hardworking man and throw Marc a follow on Twitter and Soundcloud.

Shelter From The Storm – Marc E. Bassy

Marc dropped off this acoustic rendition of a classic Bob Dylan song to hold his fans over for the holidays, and despite the simplicity, I think you’ll find this to be just as fulfilling as his other material. Light rainfall, organic strumming, reverb heavy vocals, crisp percussion, and melodic whistling culminate into an upbeat feel-good cover.

When we talked to him and Count Bassy over the summer they both hyped up this “big” sound that they’ve been working on, and although they’ve been putting out consistently great material, I think this is just the tip of the iceberg. The inviting acoustic and R&B tracks are phenomenal, but those of us who have seen his potential behind the mic are craving witty bars and lyrical anthems. ‘Shelter From The Storm’ is originally a 70’s rock anthem, and if you’re familiar with Bob Dylan, you can tell that this version from Marc E Bassy is much less rigid, and a little more on-tune vocally. It’s a great song and the quality of this cover definitely merits a listen. If you like what you hear, be sure to throw Bassy a follow on Twitter and Soundcloud to show some support.

Dirt On You – Marc E. Bassy

This is the side of Marc we’re going to be hearing for the next few months, so settle in and get comfortable, because this music isn’t made for partying like his antecedent project The East Hollywood EP. Instead, the Bassy team is dishing out hot and heavy R&B tunes as they ease into the new year. Thankfully, Marc shines bright on just about every genre of music he attempts to create. From the feel-good electro-pop music he made with 2AM Club to the more hip-hop oriented style he’s developed over the past year as a solo artist, Marc and his team have been creative, talented, and versatile enough to keep fans, bloggers, and competition all on their toes and hungry for his next move.

‘Dirt On You’ might be the start of a new chapter in Marc’s career, but he decided to throw it in as part of the remixing and remastering of his EP to make it a full-length iTunes project. Although the “new” project has three or four unreleased tracks, this is the only one that stood out to me as something exceptionally different. If you like ambient synths, chilling vocals, and sensual lyrics curated for bedroom maneuvers — cop this free release and throw Marc a follow on Soundcloud and Twitter to show some support.

Heroine – Marc E. Bassy & Treehouse

We met Marc and his Swedish production team Treehouse in Los Angeles over the summer, and although the music they were making at the time was dope, it didn’t sound anything like this. Marc E Bassy is a tenured artist with a handfull of successful projects under his belt, but his solo career that he embarked on just over a year ago has made him a more versatile, more refined, and more talented musician overall. “Heroine” is a perfect example of how multifaceted this young musician is; where you’d normally expect groovy Bay Area influenced hip-hop production with a twangy guitar progression in the background, this release is an acoustic indie demo with a mesmerizing melody, layered harmonies, and alluring finger picking. Marc E Bassy hasn’t announced any new project yet, but the sound he and the Treehouse production duo have stumbled across is a refreshing track to hold you over for a little while longer. If you saw our interview with Marc and his in-house producer and graphic designer Count, you know that the Bassy house is constantly working on new music, sampling new sounds, and making moves under the radar. Friend Zone – G-Eazy & Marc E. Bassy

Didn’t see this collaboration coming, but you already know this song is going to be a panty-dropper. ‘Friend Zone’ showcases G-Eazy’s softer side, which is a nice change of pace after he dropped back-to-back arrogantly written bangers last month. This song, as I’m sure you can infer, is about being friend-zoned, to which both these artists eloquently retort “fuck the friend zone”. G’s flow is downtempo, and a little bit melancholy, while Marc flexes his range and room-filling vocals. With talent like this behind the mic you can’t go wrong, so expect nothing less than greatness when you hit play. Enjoy, and be sure to show G-Eazy and Marc E. Bassy some love via Soundcloud.

Rock The Boat – Aaliyah (Treehouse & Marc E Bassy Remix)

We kicked it with these two while we were in Los Angeles last month, and although they told us a lot about their plans for 2015, I didn’t see this silky smooth Aaliyah remix coming. It’s impressive how well Marc’s voice and Treehouse’s groovy production seem to vibe with Aaliyah’s seemingly untouchable originals, and the end result is a funky and bass heavy twist on an R&B classic, and although tampering with her material is like walking on thin ice, these three artists eloquently and meticulously perfected this remix. Check it out, I guarantee you you’ll be feeling this.

Come Back – Skizzy Mars & Marc E. Bassy

This is the dream team right here; Skizzy Mars, Marc E Bassy, and Michael Keenan have an unrivaled chemistry in the studio that can only be described as creative bliss. Hopefully you caught their last collab No Problem, but if not, take this chance to get acquainted with their sound. Michael is a versatile producer, but maintains a coherent sound that resonates with ambient synths, jazzy vibes, and perfectly placed percussion. We did an interview with him last month that gave us an inside look into his process and development, so check that out if you’ve got a minute. Marc’s vocals have this new-age R&B sound that’s easily identifiable, and having just released his East Hollywood EP last month, it’s a pleasant surprise to hear him dropping new material with Penthouse Music prodigy Skizzy Mars already. Skizzy just hopped off his Red Balloon tour, which hopefully means we can expect a steady stream of new content from him this summer. He and Marc released this sort of eerie love-song as a plea for a second chance with a girl they mistreated and lost somewhere along the way to success. It’s a super vibey, really downtempo track that pairs well with any midnight smoke session. Check it out, cop the free download if you like what you hear, and be sure to follow Skizzy, Marc, and Michael on twitter to show some support.

The East Hollywood EP – Marc E. Bassy (Mixtape)

May 1, 2015

Download The East Hollywood EP - Marc E. Bassy

About a year ago, Marc Griffin had left 2 AM Club and assumed the pen name Marc E. Bassy to begin is journey as a solo artist. In a matter of months, he debuted his first project Only The Poets — an inspiring work of art that grossed millions of plays — and showed fans that he was more than capable of making great music on his own. Since then, we’ve seen collabs with Skizzy Mars, a couple of freestyles, writing for other artists, but not a whole lot of studio-quality releases for himself — until today, that is. A few days ago he premiered this project’s “anthem” track, Some Things Never Change, which resonated with creativity and maturity, something that we’ve grown to expect from Marc E. Bassy. What I had in mind when I heard the track, and the announcement of his East Hollywood EP, was a plethora of summer-centered upbeat jams on a brand new versatile project. This wasn’t the case, but I’d be lying if I said I was disappointed. This EP is the most coherent project I’ve heard in awhile; it’s lyrically powerful, emotionally compelling, and retains the artistic R&B style that’s truly defines the core of Marc’s music. There’s a wide array of subjects he touches on in the short 9-track project; drugs, drinks, women, fame, fortune, cities, emotions, and himself, just to name a few. The production, which he did himself, is mostly down-tempo, piano-based, and ambient in it’s aura. If you like catchy lyrics, quotable hooks, incredible vocals, and insightful vibes, this tape is for you. Cop the free download and show Marc some love on twitter, follow him on soundcloud, and share this project with your friends if you like what you hear.
