4/4 – Meek Mill (Mixtape)

If I’m being honest, I don’t know what I think of Meek Mill anymore. I feel like his sound is limited to turn up/war anthems, which isn’t a bad thing, but a multimillionaire artist without diversity is bound to be a has-been, not a legend.

Meek’s album that dropped over Summer 2015 was highly anticipated; I mean, the release date was delayed two years because the MMG rapper ended up in jail after violating his probation and posing with some guns on Instagram. However, the project didn’t live up to the hype, and he’s spent the last few months recovering from the failed release, the embarrassing Drake beef, and a world tour with his wifey Nicki Minaj.

4/4 is the first “project” that Mill has released since last summer, and at the very least it’s on par with what we’d expect from him. Each song on this project features explosive, monumental, Chicago-branded production accompanied by violent lyrics about surviving in the trap, getting money, etc. It’s not an original story, but it’s definitely the kind of music that’ll have your speakers knocking, and that’s all that matters from a Meek Mill drop. Check it out and throw him a follow on Twitter and Soundcloud if you’re feeling it.

Spent Me – Lil Durk & Meek Mill

Chicago is going to love this song, and that’s all that really matters to these two trap-rap stars. The track’s artwork does a really good job of summarizing the city’s hip-hop scene and what the song is intended to represent; the Chicago flag draped over Lil Durk frames the only two lifestyles that the youth knows how to pursue: gang banging and recording music. Durk, who had a quick rise to fame in 2013 and 2014, hasn’t received the global recognition that his feature Meek has obtained for his auditory achievements. After being shut down — and threatened — by Los Angeles rappers Tyga and The Game, Lil Durk faded from the public’s view and was forced to fall back on his inner-city fans to keep his career alive.

‘Spent Me’ is a hyphey song, full of quick jabs and a classic ATL instrumental from Don Cannon and Durk’s official DJ, DJ Bandz. Layers of tight and ambient strings stretch over upbeat percussion and resounding sirens to give the song an elegant, yet distinctly villainous sound. Durk and Meek showcase their resentment for fair-weather fans and false friends, but make sure to shoutout the ghetto for holding them down when noone else would. It’s exactly what you would hope to hear from these two, so if you’re a fan of Meek and Durk be sure you’re following them on Soundcloud to keep up with future and past releases.

RICO – Meek Mill & Drake (XVII Remix)

If you haven’t copped Meek Mill’s album yet, I don’t know what the hell you’ve been doing. The project was delayed for over a year after Meek went to jail for violating his probation, but fans everywhere are proud to say that the album was worth the wait. Needless to say, one of the hardest hitting tracks on DWMTM features Drizzy Drake. RICO, as you probably guessed, refers to the U.S.’s  RICO Act, which stands for something that has to do with taking down huge criminal organizations. Whether you’re a trap god making millions off of illegal drug trade, or a college student who can never seem to find a drug dealer on the weekends, this song will have you feeling like you run the city. If the kingpin anthem could hit any harder, XVII would be the man to do it. He integrates some huge ominous horns, complex drum sequences, while still retaining the savage verses from two all-star rappers. Cop the free download, show XVII some support via soundcloud and twitter, and make sure you bump this track next time you have your squad together.

Meek Mill has reported that he’s about 70 percent through recording his sophomore album, and yesterday he decided to throw this track out to his fans free of charge. We have the pleasure of hearing Cardo on the beat, and as usual he delivers Meek a banger. Neither of this artists need much of an introduction, and if your a fan of either I can say with confidence you’ll enjoy this track. Meek did say that he would release his sophomore project sometime in the spring but didn’t specify when exactly. This might be the last we see from him for awhile so hit that play button and cop this free release from MMG’s Dreamchaser.

Dreamchasers 3 (Mixtape) – Meek Mill

A tad late on this review, but Meek Mill released the third installment in his “Dreamchaser” mixtape series and I was dully impressed at best. In all honesty it was an improvement from the second tape Meek released, but the two combined don’t have anything on the original “Dreamchaser” record that started his mainstream career. For a member of as big a label as MMG I was disappointed in the sloppy, slapdash instrumentals and production work on most of the tracks and it probably shouldn’t bug me but; how’re you gonna give Nicki Minaj more then one feature on the tape? Anywho, if you’re a Meek fan I recommend still downloading this tape but if your just looking for some tracks to spotlight here’s what your probably looking for; “I’m Leanin”, “Make Me”, “Lil Nigga Snupe”, “Ain’t Me”, & “I B On Dat”.

New banger from Meek Mill off his upcoming tape ‘Dreamchasers 3’. For whatever reason he still feels the need to assure his listeners that he’s better than everyone else, but maybe that’s what we love about Meek. Give it a listen, worst case scenario you get another track to turn up to.
