Triple-Double – Emilio Paredes & Steezefield

A subtle piano rift begins this track, but right at 10 seconds the drums take this beat in an entirely different direction than I expected. Having listened to Emilio’s other tracks, I thought this might be a slower song. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the switch up to rapid hi-hats paired with a fast paced bass kick and steady snare. The deep bass line and higher pitched piano seems to really bring out Emilio’s deep voice, making it seem fuller throughout the track. At 50 seconds, Emilio adds slight distortion and some well timed vocal overlays to the track giving everything his unique touch. This short distortion reveals a line “Ep coming through yea bitch I’m stuntin,” which we hope to see soon.

Emilio then drops the distortion for a second for what seems like is going to be another verse; but well timed overlays mixed with distortion continue through to break way for the beat change at 1:55 featuring Von Alexander. This was my first time hearing Alexander, and I am happy to say that he was a great fit for this song. His voice and lyrical style seemed to pair with that of Emilio perfectly. The track ends with an ominous warning “I suggest you start paying attention” before the track trails off and ends. So, pay some attention to both Emilio and Von on Twitter, and check out the Soundcloud pages for Emilio and Von too.

They Don’t Know – Emilio Paredes & Steezefield

They Don't Know - Emilio Paredes & Steezefield
Free Download | They Don't Know - Emilio Paredes & Steezefield

As soon as the beat dropped off, I knew this song was something special that Steezefield and Emilio have been cooking up. Unlike their usual ambient, melancholy sound, this is a go hard, turn up, and “keep your middle finger high” anthem. Steezefield built a beat around this panning synth melody, and rather than muffling his percussion he breaks out an unprecedentedly explosive drum kit and mixes a brisk, invigorating production for Emilio to flow over.

‘They Don’t Know’ is a claim to the throne in some ways; Emilio and Steeze had been growing their following with their new wave hip-hop sound,  but even bloggers like myself didn’t truly appreciate what these two musicians were capable of. Whereas some listeners branded them with a one-track style that would slowly fade away, others saw the potential that these two Chicago natives wielded.

Emilio couldn’t have started this song off better: “I hop out the coupe and they know who I am. Drop a hit in this bitch then I dip, that’s the plan. I bet they won’t say shit, but I bet they gone’ play this.” Clearly this whole song is a jab at the nonbelievers, and if you don’t want to be added to the list of fans who hopped on the bus too late you should cop the free download and throw Emilio and Steezefield a follow on Soundcloud.

Hotline Bling – Steezefield & Emilio Paredes

I’m always skeptical of Drake covers/reworks; no one can hit the custom OVO-crafted beats quite like the 6 God himself. I hit play on this because I’m a fan of just about everything Steezefield and Emilio have dropped together. That being said, I can’t honestly say that I liked this track more than the original Drizzy release from last week, but I can say that this is some of the best delivery, production, and all around music that this duo has put out. Steezefield sounds like a refined R&B singer on the chorus, and both of their verses showcase an intimate yet still characteristically somber style. If you dig it, show some support by throwing Steezefield and Emilio Paredes a follow on soundcloud.

For Nothing – Emilio Paredes

Emilio sent me this track last week, and it took me awhile to figure out what to say about this one. The production is on point, the usual style we’ve come to expect from him is clearly evident, but maybe that’s why I’m struggling to describe the highlights of this song. Emilio has crafted a sound that’s centered around solemn lyrics and somber production, but when we first posted his material to our site the story was much different. Night’s Long was an impeccable summer anthem, but I haven’t heard Emilio rap over something with a BPM that high ever since. Emilio Paredes is the kind of artist you listen to when it’s gray and rainy outside and you want to get lost in your feelings for awhile, but he’s honestly capable of being so much more than that. Although this release is solid, it isn’t the good vibe banger I was hoping Emilio would pull out for beach season. If you’re in Seattle, or anywhere else that’s gloomy in July, this track is made for you. If you’re like me and still trying to soak in as much sunshine, alcohol, and feel-good music as you can, save this track for an overcast day and you’ll be glad you did. Cop the free download and show Emilio some love on twitter and soundcloud.

Play – Emilio Paredes

Free Download | Play - Emilio Paredes

After releasing his debut project Places last month, Emilio saw more success than a lot of artists do off their first EP; accruing thousands of new plays, fans, and followers, who were all sitting on their seat in anticipation of his next release. Play is the culmination following that genuinely brief hiatus, and I think it lived up to expectations. He sticks with his usual style and delivery, and I don’t think it’s wrong of me to say that Emilio’s sound doesn’t deviate from this ambient, down-tempo, lyrically-focused vibe very often (with the exception of Right Now, off his Places project). Our west coast prodigy links up with Steezefield once again, who flexes some heavy and bouncy bass coated in detailed panning percussion and an eerie chorus-like sample; he’s really mastered this deep, introspective atmosphere production style. Emilio’s filtered hook melds into the production seamlessly, but his verses provide a lyrically rich contrast to the low frequency instrumental. Full of quotable bars, Play is a song about a convoluted relationship that’s full of mixed feeling and signals. Hit play, cop the free download, follow Emilio Paredes on soundcloud and twitter, and be sure to share the track if you’re feeling it.

Said That – Steezefield & Alex Jordahl

Said That - Steezefield & Alex Jordahl

Free Download | Said That - Steezefield & Alex Jordahl

These two artists never cease to impress me, and their chemistry when they collab is transcendent. Although they generally produce their own material, “Said That” features production by the renowned Stwo; he pulls from a track of his called “With You,” which you can find on his project Ninety Two.

The subject of this song is a day in the life of Steeze and Jordahl: new friends, new habits, new music but new emotions that are brought on by their pursuit of music and abandonment of everything that holds them back. An airy sample reverberates along with the ambient piano and spacey bass, setting a dark aura for the two artists to flow over. The result is excellent as always, and sits as another testament to the diversity of the Chi-Town music scene.

Follow Steezfield and Alex Jordahl on twitter, stay tuned for Steeze’s project Leave a Light on, Please set to drop this June, and share this track via the social links below if you’re feeling it.

Places – Emilio Paredes (EP)

Download Places - Emilio Paredes (EP)

Here it is, Emilio Paredes highly anticipated debut project ‘Places’. You might recognize a few of these tracks that we’ve shared in the past, but for the most part this tape showcases new, versatile, and lucid material. His music has this sort of pensive and melancholy vibe, which he reflects even in his album art; blue-tint, rain droplets, and hazy vision correlate perfectly with his ambient disconsolate sound. With the help of InviteOnly’s Steezefield, Alex Jordahl, and experimental producer NOVA, the tape comes together into an intelligible compilation that covers everything from love to hate, squad goals to self-fulfillment, and the places he’s seen and plans to see. This isn’t the kind of EP you put on your beach-drinking playlist, this is what you play when you’re driving around your city at night with the windows down, the kind of music that brings about insightful thoughts and makes you contemplate what places you want to see for yourself. All in all, I’m proud to be able to share such a contemplative project with y’all, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Show some love and shout out Emilio Paredes on twitter, follow him on soundcloud, and if you’re looking for that fucked-up-at-the-beach anthem check out his first official release Night’s Long too.

Run – Alex Jordahl & Steezefield

Download Run - Alex Jordahl & Steezefield

2 m0nths after the release of his insightful debut EP Love Alex, Jordahl and Steezefield are back in the studio developing their sound for the last few weeks of somber-music season. Steezefield cooks up hot down-tempo beats with the flick of a wrist, and Run is a perfect example of just how talented he’s become; the beat is perfectly timed and arranged, the eerie samples coat the production with a gray haze, and the intricate instrumental workings lead the track through chilling build ups and break downs. As for Alex Jordahl, nothing he writes is superficial, so hopefully you can read between the lines and find the relatable beauty in his lyricism. Cop the free download, follow Alex J and Alex S on twitter, and expect to hear some more free material from them soon.

Never Knew – Emilio Paredes

Bay Area’s Emilio Paredes is back in the studio, and he’s kicking off 2015 with this fresh joint with production from none other than Steezefield. Fitting to his recognizable sound, the ambient instrumental is littered with an eerie sample, distant percussion, suitcase synth, and some muffled ambient vocals.  It took me a minute to figure it out, but the familiar sample finally clicked as a sped-up cut from Vicktor Taiwo’s Digital Kids that dropped last year. Despite the despondent tone, Emilio’s lyricism clearly vocalizes sanguine thoughts; tessellating love, perspicacity, and lucid epiphanies. Cop the free download, and be sure to check out the rest of Emilio and Steezefield‘s works from last year if you haven’t already. We got word that Places, Emilio Paredes debut project, should be dropping sometime this Spring, so be sure to keep up with him via twitter.

Download LOVEALEX - Alex Jordahl (Mixtape)

LOVEALEX is a lucid compilation of Alex’s hard work over this last year, and although you may recognize a few of the tracks on here, this EP reveals more about who Alex Jordahl is than anything we’ve heard from him so far. He’s young, unassuming, sensational, and creative; every song bleeds with emotional insight and artistic discernment. From start to finish the project resonates with ambient production, producers like Steezefield create the perfect stage for Alex to perform on, encompassing a sound that’s layered with melancholy guitar, faded nature-samples, crisp drums, and airy synth. Generally I’d list off the best tracks from the project, but this EP sounds more like a heart-felt letter than a mixtape; I can’t pinpoint the best track because each song seams itself into the next, it’s meant to be listened to as a whole. I don’t know what girl is the subject of Alex Jordahl’s pain, but the evocative lyrics he writes from her inspiration is as beautiful as it is tragic. The music video for High showcases some impressive visuals for such an adolescent artist, and hopefully you can relate to some of the situations he lands in. Enjoy the project, follow Alex Jordahl and Alex Steezefield on twitter, and expect to hear a lot more from them in the future.
