This is what being on top must feel like. Vic hit the ground running in 2015; captivating artists like Kanye and Jay-Z has shot him straight into the lime light. The gritty and experimental sound he’s been working with is unique, and honestly sounds more and more like a  “G.O.O.D. Music” production. There’s no way you’re going to be able to sleep on Vic Mensa after the year he’s had, join the hype and throw him a follow on soundcloud and twitter.

I Been – Vic Mensa

This new road that Vic Mensa has been stumbling down is heavy; the electronic, industrial hip-hop sound is far different from the material he was dropping in 2014. Glitchy bass, layers of dirty synth leads, and hubristic lyricism have been defining elements of Vic’s new material, from U Mad featuring Kanye to the “freestyles” he’s been releasing over the past two months. ‘I Been’ takes the same stance and addresses the same subject as his last few releases, and although I’m not necessarily feeling the message of this song, I can’t deny how eerily catchy it is. The move to Los Angeles changes a lot of artists, and if you’re familiar with Vic Mensa’s older material than it shouldn’t be hard to hear how dark his vibe has become. As always, cop the free download and show Vic some love on twitter if you like what you hear.

Another Vic Mensa track to get faded to; the heat from Chicago’s XXL Freshman has been relentless. When he dropped Feel That back in February we knew he had started down the right path, and 6 months later he continues to play into the groovy up-beat instrumentals and deliver hard-hitting verses. As his popularity has grown, Chi-Town has backed the young MC more and more, which is what this track is all about. Vibe out, cop the free download, and be sure to follow Vic Mensa on twitter.

I can say from personal experience that Vic knows how to get a crowd moving, his show we caught at SXSW was live as fuck. Down On My Luck is his newest single, and I guarantee you it’s impossible to stand still while this is playing. Stefan Ponce does an outstanding job producing this ambient funk beat, he gets creative with his sampling and sets the perfect scene for Vic Mensa to flow over. The Chi-Town based rapper comes in hard and sets a pace for the rest of the track, effortlessly connecting words in sync with the dance themed bass kick. After about a minute the track drops off into an entrancing harmony of synths interlaced with Vic Mensa’s vocals. From start to finish this song had me captivated, hopefully y’all feel the same way. Be sure to check out all the other Vic Mensa material on the site, and of course give him a follow on twitter too.

It’s Friday, so I”m sure all of you are ready to TU and put a shitty week of class behind you, but before you start taking pulls from a bottle of Everclear you need to cop this new Vic Mensa. We’re used to hearing Vic kick it over chill beats, delivering with a style similar to his Chicago counterpart Chance The Rapper, but not today. Today, Vic separated himself from the preconceptions people had about him. A hot beat from Smoko Ono is all he needed to get throwed, hit the studio, and make this fat instrumental his bitch. I definitely underestimated how raw this Chi-Town based MC was, don’t make the same mistake I did; follow him on twitter and give him a thumbs up on facebook.

Crazy - Vic Mensa

Nothing too special, but Vic released this SC produced track today from way back in 2010. Vic originally sent the track privately to fans who purchased his “#FREEWIFI Holiday Packages” off his website, but I guess he decided he might as well spread the love to the rest of his fans. If you’re not familiar with Chance The Rapper’s counterpart yet, now is a good time to join the hype.

Suitcase – Vic Mensa & Chance The Rapper

Welcome to the trippy R&B collab titled ‘Suitcase’. Everyone’s favorite Chicago rappers Vic and Chance are known for their unique lyricism and innovative production, both of which are prominent in this free new single. The entire song the go back and forth dreaming of a paradise they could escape to with nothing but a suitcase. As always, their lyrics are like a puzzle that take a few listens to unscramble. Obviously the suitcase symbolizes something, but as for the Dragon Ball Z reference in their album art I haven’t thought of an explanation. Maybe they just like Dragon Ball Z. Either way, kick back and enjoy some modern Chicago-Blues.

Vic delivers some very thought-provoking bars in this new track featuring MMG’s Rockie Fresh and Beldina. After publishing “All Me” by Drake right before this, Vic brought some refreshing lyricism to my speakers. I really hope these guys make it, just because the world deserves to hear some rappers who aren’t full of themselves yet, that have something meaningful to spit into the mic. Grab this track, and value the life lessons from Vic and Rockie as they preach over this ambient instrumental.

“Everything happens for a reason, if you choose to look at it that way and put truth into the things that you do and really believe what you say. They say that the darkest night comes before the brightest morning, I like to think I’d ask the right things if God was right before me. Like, ‘Why you let babies get shot, while babies is killing? All because the system that raised me from gradeschool made me the villain.'”

Mick Jenkins grabs the 2013 all-star Chance The Rapper and his similar sounding homie Vic Mensa for this jazzy laid back track. Chance’s tongue twisting verse flies high above Vic and Mick, but still definitely worth a full listen. Chicago’s definitely developed their own sound, and their jazzy smoking vibe is taking over the rap game right now.

Yet another smooth jazzy track from Chicago’s up and coming MC Vic Mensa. After the feature he had with Chance The Rapper, it’s hard not to compare their two very similar styles of flow, but the cleaned up and less trippy lyricism from Vic is definitely easy listening. This guy’s good, and I think the image he’s developing musically is going to take him places, especially when he drops his project ‘INNANETAPE’. Enjoy.
